FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why are filter changes important?
A: Filters help protect HVAC equipment from dirt or particulate in the air which create build-up on the coils or other parts in the unit. A regular filter change program will keep the unit running at maximum efficiency and prolongs the life of fan motors and compressors.
Q: Why is a programmable thermostat so important?
A: Programmable thermostats allow you to run your heating and cooling system only when needed. The thermostat will turn off the heating or cooling system when your home or office is unoccupied – saving you money on energy costs.
Q: What does a preventative maintenance program include?
A: There are three different preventative maintenance programs:
1. Preventative Maintenance:
Includes regular filter changes and equipment inspection. Most equipment will be serviced on a quarterly basis, although it depends on the condition of the equipment. During the fall and winter the focus will be on the heating section of the unit, while spring and summer focus on the cooling side of the system.
Technician will:
- Inspect all electrical and connections
- Change filters and check pulleys, bearings and belts (lubricate bearings every 6 months)
- Inspect coils on units, check condensate pan and clean out condensate
trap - Verify operation of heating, cooling and economizer
- Inspect heat exchanger for any cracks or holes
2. Comprehensive Maintenance:
Includes everything from Preventative Maintenance plus annual coil cleaning in spring and burner cleaning in fall.
3. All Inclusive Maintenance:
Includes everything noted in both of the above programs plus all labour and parts for repairs are included. Unit replacements would not be included in program.
Q: Why should the coils on my HVAC unit be cleaned regularly?
A: Just like air filters, coils accumulate a build-up of dirt and particulate, especially coils on the outside of the building. If coils are not cleaned regularly, it creates stress on the equipment and may cause it to fail. Plus, regular coil cleaning will allow your equipment to run at maximum efficiency.
Q: What is the difference between a heat pump and air conditioner?
A: A heat pump can both cool and heat your home or office, while an air conditioner can only cool. The heat pump has a reversing valve which allows it to cool in the warmer months and heat in the cooler months.
